There are theories and there are facts. Theories are what we use to attempt to explain facts.

Gravity is a great example. There is the fact of gravity. When I throw an object in the air, it returns to earth. That is observable and undeniable and therefore fact. But why does it return to earth? The theory of gravity attempts to explain why this fact occurs.

Evolution is similar. You have the observable change of organisms, from one species to another, which is undeniable fact. But why it happens, and the mechanisms that allow for it are covered by the theory.

Rick Perry is incorrect when he says that it is “only a theory.” Furthermore, he is not using the scientific definition of the word theory and is instead using the layperson’s definition of theory in an attempt to discredit the figurative mountain of scientific evidence which supports the theory of evolution.”

Ask and you shall receive…immediately

I went to catechism for many years, all the way through my sophomore year of highschool. That year, they changed the class schedule from one Sunday a month for three hours to two Sundays a month for two hours. My mom, the catholic-in-name only that she is, told me she didn’t really feel like dealing with dropping me off and picking me twice as much (didn’t have a license yet), so she said I could decide if I wanted to finish the last year of catechism so I could get confirmed, or not. I never got anything out of it, and was thrilled to be able to not only leave the confines of bullshit that I had no passion for, but to actually be able to make the decision myself. I don’t regret the years I spent in CCD, because it helped me to realize that I didn’t buy any of it, and that I didn’t believe in Christianity. I believed in God still, but now I was well on the path to changing my perception of what “God” truly might be, if anything at all.

Thinking about this today reminded me of the last or second to last year of catechism, where I encountered one of the things that made me realize some Christians really are just fucking deluded. These two girls were there to speak about their “relationship” with God, and how he had helped them. At one point it devolved into them basically saying, “And then I was like, really sad, so I was like up in my room, like crying and sad and stuff, and so, like, I asked God to make me not sad, and he like, did. Then like, I wasn’t sad anymore, cuz like, God took away all the sadness because I like asked him to.” I mean, that’s basically what was said, give or take a few “likes”.

Sad? Just ask God to make you not sad, and you will instantly feel better! Wait, what? It didn’t work for you? Well you’re probably just a liberal who watches too much sex on TV then, I guess.

Thankfully I was raised well by my parents, so I have a fully functioning moral compass that causes me to be nice and polite to people because that’s how I want to be treated, and not because I think it will get me into magic happy land. Honestly, I suspect the only reason my parents ever made me go to catechism was because of pressure from my grandmother, and maybe because they had to when they were younger, and it just seemed like what you have your kids do. I don’t hold it against them, because religion was never part of our daily life, and my sister and I were able to come to our own conclusions about what we know and believe.

This just made me realize that I have no idea what my sister believes/disbelieves currently. Topic for our next conversation when she comes to see her new nephew!

Anyone who thinks that not swearing gives them some moral high ground or that it shows a greater intelligence

can go fuck themselves.

Because fuck you.

I remember explaining in Catechism why I thought there was nothing wrong with swearing. I don’t think I realized it at the time, but I’m pretty sure I was having the shit judged out of me. Probably had a few “Are you serious” rage faces aimed my way, except with more halo and less atheism.

What a joke, eh?

My wife had a chiropractor appointment this past Wednesday. I came with her so I could watch our 3 week old son while she was adjusted and had her exam. Linus, my son, was being fussy, so I was walking around and swaying him, and eventually calmed him down enough to sit down. Shortly after that, this older gentleman, maybe in his 50’s or 60’s came over by me. This was our exchange, paraphrased as best as I can.

Older gentleman: Oh good job dad! How old is he?

Me: Just a little over 3 weeks old

OG: I remember when my daughter was born, it was the most amazing thing! I saw her and I just knew that there had to be a Maker.

I smile politely, but say nothing. At this point my wife has come back over. I should add that my wife and I are both agnostic, but certainly don’t take the existence of aesthetically pleasing things as proof of a higher being.

OG: It’s just so amazing when you look at them, or even that spine they’ve got around here (referring to a fullsize model of the human spine), and you think ‘How could that come from some slime or whatever?’ (I guess that was his dig at evolution, a concept of which he is obviously extremely knowledgeable about)

Me & Wife: …….. (Still smiling politely, but uneasily)

OG: What a joke, eh?

Me & Wife: …….. (Still smiling politely, but getting annoyed. We both made an effort to not actually utter any real words like “yeah” that would confirm that his beliefs were not, in fact, retarded. I think one of us might have said something like “heyehmm”.)

The guy went away. I assumed he had left.

Me, to Linus who I am holding: “Linus, one of the most important lessons you will learn in life is the “Smile & Nod”

Then I realized the guy was still very close by. I don’t know if he heard me or not, but I felt better anyway.

Seriously, who the fuck does that? I don’t go up to random strangers and say “Oh man, can you believe that people go to church and pray? What a joke, eh?” I don’t know, maybe there was something about my thrift store plaid shirt, baseball cap, khakis, and Sauconys that just screamed “This young fellow is clearly a Young Earth Creationist!” instead of “This young fellow is a hipster dad who can’t stand religious old people!”

I’m happy to report…

I’m happy to report that you’re an ignorant asshat.

I’m happy to report that because of you fuckheads closing down planned parenthood, there will be more unwanted children, more demand for abortion, more STDs, and more single mothers raising children that will be a “burden” to the system.

You ignorant fundie motherfuckers.

I wish for your expedient deaths, and the re-opening of said PP facilities!

well I mean, sometimes rape could be prevented if people actually payed attention. I’m just saying that people are freaking out about this rape issue and its like “you don’t want to be raped, then make sure you don’t get raped” I mean, you can’t control what other people think/do, but you can control how you think/act which in return could prevent you from being raped. so instead of saying that we aren’t teaching that raping is wrong, you should be focusing on the fact that we’re bringing attention to the fact that rape can be avoided with proper precautions.

i wanna explain something to you, if i may?
“you don’t want to be raped, then make sure you don’t get raped” you can’t “make sure” you don’t get raped. do you realize how ridiculous that sounds? sexual assault involves some one taking away your control against your will and taking advantage of you. you can’t “make sure” that doesn’t happen. “rape can be avoided with proper precautions”? rape can be avoided if rapists don’t rape people.

or how about you stick up or yourself if you’re raped while you’re awake? how about you carry protection in case of that? or if you’re afraid of getting raped in your sleep, lock your door, wear a chastity belt, keep mace by your bed side, buy life alert. lots of things can be done and you guys just don’t seem to understand that you can stick up for yourselves instead of being helpless. what i’m trying to say is this “rape is wrong, but you are your best defense against rape, just be prepared”granted, if it’s a 300 pound man who has developed an an immunity to mace and is wearing a cup. yeah, he’d be hard to get away from, but like, at least listen to what the teachers say so you can at least put up a fight and have a chance of not getting raped. “the society” is just trying to lower the likelihood of people getting raped. we don’t need people to say “raping is bad” because we already know that. people do it anyways, but like i said, the rapee has a chance to not get raped if they know what to do.

The mere fact that a woman ought to “protect herself” and that the emphasis in society (YOU ARE LIVING, BREATHING, INFURIATING MOTHERFUCKING PROOF OF THIS) is upon THIS and not that rapist shouldn’t RAPE is enraging as hell.
You are the most infuriating, idiotic, willfully ignorant individual I have EVER encountered on Tumblr, and I’ve dealt with a LOT of stupid asshats.
You cannot PREVENT someone slipping a date-rape drug into your drink. Sure, you might argue “well then, don’t drink at a party! You should’ve known better!” I’ll be sure to keep that in mind the next time I’m watching someone drowning in a pool. “You knew you could’ve drowned—you shouldn’t have done it!” Or the next time I watch someone choking. “You knew you could’ve choked while eating, stupid!”
I don’t think I can tell you to go fuck yourself enough times to appease anyone offended by your ignorant bullshit.
What about the twelve year old little girl who gets raped? Will you yell at her for not fighting off her attacker well enough? Will you point your finger and call her helpless, because she was assaulted? Is she stupid because she wasn’t wearing a chastity belt, because she had no idea what sex was? Is she weak because a full-grown man overpowered her? Is she an idiot because she wasn’t carrying a gun with her, or mace? Because she didn’t realize that she was going to be raped, because she didn’t know what sex even was, because she didn’t realize that anyone could ever be such an absolutely heartless bastard?
PEOPLE LIKE YOU ARE THE PROBLEM. You ought to feel ashamed of yourself. I don’t think I have ever been so enraged.

WTF, tumblr? I am 100% against rape victim blaming or slut shaming. I think convicted rapists are the scum of the earth, and I would be pretty okay if the penalty for it was being shot in the anus until you’re dead. However, I don’t see anyone actually condoning rape or blaming the victim here. The point is that we can’t control what some stupid douchebag decides to do. If he’s going to do it, then he’s going to do it. I definitely think the priority should be making the penalties worse to deter this kind of shitfuck behavior, to make sure that no victim is EVER, EVER blamed, and to ensure the rapist is never let off the hook for any reason, be it status, athleticism, or fame. However, that doesn’t mean it’s not important for people to take the proper precautions against being raped. No, I sure as hell am not suggesting that a person should remove themselves from any situation that brings even a tiny threat of rape, because then you’d just be a shut-in living in your panic room having food being delivered through a slot in your 8 inch thick steel door. But you should be aware of your surroundings, and you should make sure you don’t leave your drink unattended, etc. It’s the same kind of common sense stuff that you use daily to make sure you aren’t mugged and that your house isn’t burglarized. You have to focus on protecting yourself, especially in a dumbass society where fuckwads can get away with rape because of bullshit social stigmas, because you can’t control what other people do. This isn’t victim blaming. This isn’t insensitive. It’s saying, “Wow, our society sure has some fucked up views on rape victims that need to change. While we work on that, put in some extra effort to protect yourselves, ladies, because there are some real douchers out there.”
Maybe I’m giving some of these posters too much credit, but I’m also seeing some majore overreactions here.

Hooray for cuts!

Well Michelle got her first paycheck affected by Walker’s cuts. It’s only about $180 less than usual, so that’s no big deal. I mean, we just had a baby and all, so what would we need that money for anyway? I’m glad state workers got put in their place so that a bunch of selfish cunts could feel better about themselves. I mean, who do these thousandaire state workers think they are?
